How Important Is The College Essay?
How Important Is The College Essay? The implication in Dr. Weaver 's criticism is clear. Nurses worry about the feelings of people, while doctors worry about seeing the next patient or about developing enough distance emotionally so that they can move quickly from one medical crisis to another. Nurses, a profession dominated by women, are the ones who are supposed to soothe over any hurts caused by a too abrupt or too uncaring doctor. My own experiences with hospitals as well as the experiences of friends of mine seem unanimous on this. Nurses were great, and if you were lucky you got a doctor with a decent bedside manner. In fact, your essay could end up hurting an application for an otherwise strong candidate if it appears hastily written or not well thought-out. Therefore, they can devote more time and resources to each individual application. You might be surprised to learn that essays are that important, but keep in mind that at top schools, there are at least 4 academically-qualified candidates for every open spot. To truly assess an applicantâs fit with the school, admissions officers need the essays. Essays are your one opportunity to share your voice, your unique experiences, and your perspective. At the top 250 schools, your essays generally account for 25% of your overall application. This is only slightly behind the 30% for extracurriculars. Essays are actually ahead of the 20% for grades and coursework, 15% for test scores, and 10% for recommendations and interviews. Your essays are necessarily a reflection of your mind, and the admissions officers want to know that you have the âsoft skillsâ to excel in their program. But for the most part, the professionals who really looked after loved ones were nurses. Part of this is likely the result of the different roles nurses and doctors play within the hierarchy of the hospital. Depending on how it is that you write, you may use this list in one of two ways. This is something you are familiar with from high school writing. You donât want to write an entire essay only to find out you were completely off topic. At any point in time during your college education, youâll probably have one or more papers to write for your classes. Colleges would be irresponsible to offer you a place in their program if you do not have the basic skills needed to succeed. Dr. Allen Grove is an Alfred University English professor and a college admissions expert with 20 years of experience helping students transition to college. Hospitals divide the labor of caring for sick people among the professions, but because the professions are still dominated by certain genders, the division ends up being one of gender more than job title. Although we like to think of the medical profession as increasingly egalitarian, gender divides still run through it. When Carol Hathaway, a long time ER nurse, decides to go back to med school and become a doctor, the MDs in the ER treat her very differently. Dr. Kerry Weaver asks her to perform procedures as if she were already a med student. While Carol is uncomfortable with this, she does perform well. Her skill at those procedures seems to make the point that nurses who excel at their profession are as skilled as doctors in some ways. However, later in the episode, when a mother 's young child dies, Carol insists on giving the parent time with the child to grieve, rather than moving her out of the room to make way for incoming patients. Dr. Weaver snaps at Carol, telling her that if she is going to go to medical school, she has to stop thinking like a nurse. With the right amount of control and flexibility, colleges can create a pleasant learning environment with maximum safety and minimal interruptions. During your scholarship applications, you may need to submit a 500-word essay answering a specific question. The process by which doctors are socialized into how to be a doctor comes largely through the mentoring process of medical school. Vocational training within the applied sciences tends to be much more about apprenticeship than about theoretical knowledge. The theme of the essay can range from personal achievements to political controversies. This means you can adjust your writing style to fit the message of the prompt. This guide will explain how to write a 500-word scholarship essay. Each school, professor and student body is different. Colleges must adapt their rules and discipline efforts to reflect the current needs of their students. Eliminating cell phones in college classrooms is an overstretch, but there are ways to balance studentsâ rights and instructorsâ rights.

The fact is that most of us have not had such a life changing situation before the age of 18 (so donât make one up either!). Even if you have had such an experience, donât write about it. These types of pieces can come off negatively, and sometimes a teenagerâs perception of a life changing event is much different than that of a college admissions reader. I once had a student who wrote about how he observed a water droplet while on vacation. A great introduction does not need to be outrageous or sensational, but it should give the admissions committee a good sense of your personality. A student's narrative can help admissions officers understand how their storyline intersects with the institution's purpose. While many students stress over their essays, it's important to remember that this is just one component of the admissions process, and rarely the decisive factor. That doesn't mean that the essay is unimportant; it does give you an opportunity to directly make your case to the admissions committee. This seemingly insignificant event caused him to think about why he loved art and philosophy over science and math. You can help students by sharing these four college essay myths and facts before they write their essays and click send to the schools of their dreams. Sample essays can provide you with some great inspiration, and valuable insights into how to write a great essay. However, be careful not to get so caught up reading other peoplesâ essays that you neglect to start your own. Itâs also easy to fall into the comparison trap and begin worrying that your essays will never be as good as these examples. Remember that the sample essays colleges are posting are the BEST essays from among the thousands of students they admit. So, most accepted studentsâ essays are not this exceptional. Just keep a healthy perspective on its relative importance as you write. In 2017, Carolina Williams earned admission to Yale thanks in part to an application essay about her love of Papa John's pizza. Williams' essay brought widespread recognition from news outlets and social media, and demonstrated how admissions essays can help students add a personal touch to an otherwise faceless process. The piece highlighted her distinct literary style and fun personality, and it's a model that other applicants should emulate. On its admissions page, Hamilton lists multiple college essay examples written by students admitted to the school. Though Inzer declined to single out one essay, she says that the examples offer a diverse mix of student voices and backgrounds. The essay excerpted below, with the permission of Hamilton College, shows the studentâs personality through a love of fly-fishing. Iâm surprised when students have trouble writing their college essays. And of course, it goes without saying that you should NEVER copy or imitate someone elseâs essay. If you try to make your essay sound like someone elseâs, it will end up sounding fake and awkward, and will NOT work to your advantage. Contrary to popular belief, students should not write about a horrible life event that changed their life forever.

Why The First Sentence Of Your College Essay Is The Most Important
Why The First Sentence Of Your College Essay Is The Most Important The problem is that our national narrative about âcollegeâ has created a decidedly false dichotomy between the two primarily professed purposes of college. There is the camp that says college is about preparing a person for work â" to help them get a good or better job. What more do we need to end the silly debate about the purpose of college as job training vs. life training? If we view it too narrowly as job training, we miss the purposeful elements that bring work to life. And if we view it too broadly as life preparation, we lose focus on the single most important aspect of bringing life to itâs fullest through work. Work is not just about a paycheck; itâs also about a purpose. Helping graduates achieve purposeful work may indeed be the purpose of college. The format of a 500-word scholarship essay is similar to a shorter essay. Each paragraph is about words, and it consists of 3-5 well-written sentences. Art graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where he was the top-ranked liberal arts student in his class. Art pioneered the one-on-one approach to test prep in California in 1989 and co-founded Compass Education Group in 2004 in order to bring the best ideas and tutors into students' homes and computers. Although he has attained perfect scores on all flavors of the SAT and ACT, he is routinely beaten in backgammon. The Compass 360 provides SAT and ACT scores for some of the most competitive colleges in the country. If you are writing a story or personal anecdote, the formatting can be more like a novel than a news article. Learn to write the perfect 500 word essay with this step-by-step guide. Do you think she should retake the ACT just to improve the writing part? Reading your other comments sounded like she may not need to do that but would like to confirm. She does have 4.0 unweighted GPA so far, SAT Math II 790, SAT Bio 770. Includes sample introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs. It is my experience that everything that you send to a school is read. But our dialogue is horribly stuck in the muck of an either/or debate on these two fronts. You can only report an essay score by reporting all of your scores . Likewise, if you report your ACT scores, your Writing score will be included. If a school superscores, they will not downgrade you because of the 33. If the essay is optional, I donât see any reason to submit that test date. In fact, this is by far the most commonly cited reason for why Americans value higher education â" to get a good job. Make no mistake, many of us see the purpose of college as both a job-driven and a life-driven purpose. Your essay score will not hurt your application. I donât know of any superscoring colleges that will not superscore across SATs W/ and W/O Essay. I then took the ACT again without writing and got a 34. Should I take the entire ACT with writing again, or does the essay from my initial test carry over to my 34 test. She just took ACT this past June the first time. I am going to continue to dig into this further. Iâm thinking about taking the ACT to just try it and see if I can score better on it than SAT. Letâs say I take the ACT without writing and scored better on it than SAT and I send both scores to a school that requires the writing part. Will they look at my ACT score and my SAT Essay score or I have to take the ACT with writing in order for the score to be considered. Do not repeat the exam because of your Writing score.

Her 1450 is concordant with her 33 ACT and doesnât come with any essay baggage. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. Given the strength of your sonâs other scores â" especially for UCSD â" I would not worry about his 7. ⦠but they all have the common objective of presenting and defending a topic and a stance to the reader. A powerful, well-written essay can also tip the balance for a marginal applicant. In fact, they no longer even talk of recommending it. So the good news is that you donât need to worry about your 32 or your essay. I would not recommend that your daughter retest just to improve her 8. There is a very strong chance that the UCs will have dropped the essay by next year. I really doubt that the 6 would impact her, but I also donât see the need to report her ACT. Thank you for drawing our attention to Stanfordâs change. Weâve updated our list to reflect that the essay is now completely optional at Stanford. Iâm fairly certain that Dartmouth does not require Writing. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance. If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines. If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to. Test scores will only be accepted if they are submitted directly from the testing agency. If you take the test more than once, please ensure that the testing agency sends all of your scores so that we have your best performance on record. The Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim down anyways. College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play.

Custom Writing And Editing Services
Custom Writing And Editing Services I was entranced by the ways these plays advanced the idea of Feminism. I wanted to read more, and I wanted to write more on what Iâd read. My brother graduated from high school at the same time I finished my freshman year. I watched as he and his friends went off to college â" all but his best friend, Jim. Instead, I took the $2000 I had saved up from my afterschool job; bought a backpack, tent, and sleeping bag; and had an adventure that has forever changed my life and prepared me to go to college. My greatest musical achievement happened at the end of my junior year when I participated in the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. I stopped working afterschool my last two quarters and doubled my practice time to prepare for the audition. I remembered what I learned going as far back as sixth grade and gave one of the best performances of my life. I then spent a few weeks in New York with a group of students from around the country studying music with an impressive cast of professional musicians. Outside of my high school work, Iâve found myself enjoying books written by authors such as Naomi wolf and Germaine Greer. Books like the Female Eunuch have inspired me to read more Feminist books, and have encouraged me to become further involved in local activism. Iâve volunteered for a number of womenâs organizations, most recently I worked with womenâs aid to help to fundraise for a domestic violence awareness event. I helped to research and write parts of a leaflet on domestic violence, which gave me a lot of confidence in my writing and made me feel good about contributing my abilities to an important cause. Iâd like to build on this experience by helping to create some other fundraising events on campus, and potentially by joining the University Feminist society. I first new I wanted to study English at university when I studied Wuthering Heights in class at high school. I was fascinated with how Heathcliff was portrayed as some kind of monster with redeemable features. I found myself in awe at this conflicted and tortured character that Bronte had created, and mused whether he was beyond redemption. I hadnât read a book that had encapsulated such a dilemma before. I was hungry to get my hands on as many books as possible, and after reading some other classics like Of Mice and Men and In Cold Blood, our English class studied the plays Top Girls and The Doll House. At this point, my appreciation for literature reached new heights, as these were the first overtly political works that resonated with me. I did not know who I was or what I wanted, but I knew I was not ready to go to college. I also knew that I did not want to be one of those âspoiled rich kidsâ that sat home playing video games and partying on the weekends. The premise that we as humans evolve with viruses, presented viruses as somewhat useful, which was a completely new idea to me. After reading the book I became fascinated by the processes of lifeâs smallest organisms. I wanted to understand what they did, and how they were doing it. Virolution was my first insight into the shear variety and depth of the field of Biology. Outside of the narrow scope of the high school curriculum, there was a whole new world out there. We worked ten to twelve hour days and learned to push our lungs to new levels. Ever since I read Frank Ryanâs book Virolution, Iâve been captivated by the idea of understanding whatâs around me on a higher level. Ryan took the common ways that viruses were interpreted, such as natural evils and annoyances and turned them on their head. Ryanâs argument that viruses had a role in forcing evolution forward by encouraging animals to adapt was a completely new idea to me. Showing that students can write, however, does matter. Their stylistic choices matter, their word choice matters, and their authenticity matters. Still, Jager-Hyman says that some parents who get their hands on their kidsâ essays go too far and change the tone or tenor. Some essays she read were âtoo stiff, too adult and too formal,â â" not the studentâs work. Jager-Hyman notes that every writer has an editor, and editors can help select topics, tell students where the essay is lacking and help them organize their thoughts. For the first year, I went on my designated mornings, helped out, and went home, but I began to notice that other student volunteers frequently missed their allotted time and left the facility understaffed. I was that âthatâ teenager who told his parents at the end of high school that he needed to âfind himselfâ and who received a collective eye roll from every adult in a 5 mile radius. Jim was a big dreamer, talker, and âcoasterâ â" like me. Jim had not spent much time studying in high school and could only get into community college. When we talked, he did not seem down about going to community college and my initial thought was that it was no big deal. Writing a successful college admissions essay can be tough, so we've put together some example essays below to provide with some inspiration of your own.

When you are setting the scene for your essay, make sure to add information about what you saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and touched. Obviously, not all of these details will apply to every experience, but in general, it is better to add memorable details about one experience than it is to write in a generic manner about three experiences. Bauld is a former admissions officer who really knows what he's talking about. I actually enjoyed reading this book because he is truly a great writer himself. This book is easy to read and is great whether you're going straight from high school or transferring from another college. I like to think I have really good ideas, but suck a lot at getting them expressed concretely onto paper. Yet, this book helped me ground all the swirling thoughts in my head into one short page, 1000 words. The best way to get started is to help the student decide what to write about in an essay. All students have various life experiences and ways of looking at the world. They want to read about the down times when a student has failed. Sure, any student can list achievements, but thatâs not what the admissions gurus are looking for in an essay. If youâre really hesitant to work on essays because official updated prompts for your schools havenât come out yet, then working on the UC essays can be a safe alternative. The UCs rarely change the prompts and even if they did change them, the changes would probably be announced by now. Just like it says, some students are still not satisfied by what theyâve come up with, but think theyâre really close to finding the right topic. If you didnât get your drafts to them in due time to give feedback, donât get upset if they tell you that they wonât sacrifice their vacation to help you. Like I mentioned before, continue to look for opportunities to reuse drafts for other schools. You should be reaching critical mass around this time of having an essay draft for just about any prompt that a school will give you. Youâll just have to adjust word counts or the focus of the learning point a little bit.
